Poem in Spanglish

€40

€40 buys me
1kg of walnuts
1kg of buttery almonds del país
1kg de smoky avellanas crudas

medio kilo de macadamias crudas
and a heavenly half kilo of finely salted cashew nuts.

What more could a girl ask for on a blessed day?
Ah, yes of course. Friendship and Love.

[Inspired by the song Iko Iko by the Belle Stars from the movie Rain Man]

Where were you on Christmas Day?

Well, I can't recall the dinner in 2010.

Maybe I'll follow Justice Elena Kagan's choice this Christmas.

Oceans apart

Sek chou yan. That's Cantonese for "to know how to be a man / person". In Mandarin: rén

That was my father's answer to a question years back when a friend asked what dad wanted his children to be in terms of profession.
Not a lawyer, nor doctor nor engineer. As was the case for many Chinese people seeking prestige and wealth.

Well, I read law at Warwick with dad & mum's total support nonetheless, not knowing then what he really meant: sek chou yan.

More than a decade later, with the oceans separating us, I feel closer than ever to mum and dad. And a greater sense of gratitude for what they have always wanted for my brother and me: To know how to be a person in all senses of the word.

Tengo memoria de un pez (I have the memory of a fish) for things trivial and important. But somehow, this stuck: "Do good. Don't do bad. Cultivate the mind."

Cultivate it. With right understanding, patience, perseverance. It's a tall order, but worth my every waking hour.

We love you mum and dad.

Gracias a La Vida
